Welcome to Year 3
Teacher - Mr Calnan
Teaching Assistant - Miss Crowe
What we are learning in Year 3...
In Maths we are looking at place value and understanding the value of each digit in a 2- and 3-digit number. After this we are moving onto addition and subtraction. We will be learning the commutative law, how to use number lines and the column method of addition and subtraction.
In English we will be re-writing Traditional Tales. ‘Hansel and Gretel’ is our class story. Using Pie Corbett’s Talk 4 Writing approach the children will learn the key features of a traditional tale, before learning to imitate, innovate, and eventually write their own that incorporates these features and some of the language found. After this we are moving onto instructions! We will learn How to trap a dragon and adapt this to trap our own fantasy creature once we have learned the structure of a non-fiction text and the features found.
In Science we will be learning all about rocks! We will learn that rocks are found everywhere across the glove, underneath sand, land and sea. We will learn about the three types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). We will be conducting experiments on permeability, classifying rocks by features, learning about fossils (and trying to find our own!) and the layers of soils, as well as many more fun things!
For our Geography focus, we will be looking at regions within the UK. We will compare Lowestoft to a major city. We will move on to learning about the human and physical features of a coastal town, before moving on to how mountains are formed, as well as why they’re formed by looking at tectonic plate maps. We will also be learning to use an 8-point compass!
In RE we will be looking at the topics such as Baptism and understanding what it means to join the Christian family. We will learn the Christian church is not just a building but a body of believers who believe in the teachings of Jesus.
The Art focus for this half term is on drawing skills. We will be looking at how to apply pressure to affect the shading gradient, as well as learning skills such as crosshatching and blending. We will also be looking at the notable work of artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. We will be trying to create our own version of one of Van Gogh’s famous pictures before attempting our own version of Picasso’s cubism art form!
PSHE for this half term is very focused on wellbeing and mindfulness to account for how long children were off school. The importance of promoting positive mental health during these times is paramount and we will be taking this as an opportunity to celebrate what we are confident at and what we would love to learn, as well as recognising the amazing qualities that collectively we have as a class.
P.E lessons will take place on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoons. P.E will mainly take place outside whilst we have suitable weather. Please send children to school wearing appropriate P.E kit including tracksuit bottoms if the weather is cold. Please ensure they have a change of shoes. P.E will be taught in a safe manner with minimal contact between children.
