Lowestoft Schools Gala

Lowestoft Swimming Champions - St Mary’s

This Wednesday 19th June 2013, the winning Year 5 and 6 team from last week’s gala competed against Woods Loke’s A and B teams, Pakefield , Elm Tree and Oulton Broad. The girls shone winning all their races and the boys fought hard against tough opponents. There were two heats in each race which all competitors took part in, so every point counted. Many of the girls races saw easy wins for Caitlin King and Madison Lankester. The second relay race saw St Mary’s streaking ahead, winning by two-thirds of a  length lead. Tara Mills came a close second in her Freestyle race and Erica Mills helped lengthen the girls lead in the relay with her breaststroke length.

The boys had some challenging races against tough competitors but still racked up the points with Thomas Miller swimming hard to achieve fourth in the Backstroke, Luca McComb also gained a fourth place in a very close freestyle race, Rex Cotton won his first heat and came second in the second heat by a hairsbreadth. Jack Testoni swam a fast freestyle length aiding the boys team to a second place in the relay.

The points were added up and St Mary’s were the clear winners with 162 points, with the runners up amassing 118.

Great work from these eight pupils, who came back to school with gold medals and a trophy.

The next step is to represent Lowestoft in the County Gala at Bury St Edmunds in July!

Swimming Stars

A group of eight Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in a gala at Water Lane Leisure Centre on Thursday, 13th June 2013 for schools in the South Lowestoft area. Our team was made up of both experienced Club swimmers and those who had never taken part in a gala before. From the start St Mary’s shone, with Thomas Miller in the first race (25m Backstroke) swimming well to take second place in his heat. Madison Lankester followed with a huge lead in her Backstroke heat, easily claiming the first place.Rex Cotton equalled that, with a first in Breaststroke, which Caitlin King matched easily with a first in the girls Backstroke. The Freestyle races were hard fought with Luca McComb gaining a third and a place in the final, and Tara Mills racing ahead of the other girls to come first in her heat. All team members took part in the relay which was a great team effort; Jack Testoni swam freestyle aiding the boys to take second place only a touch behind the winners, and the girls, with Erica Mills in the freestyle leg, had a comfortable win. This fabulous performance by the team saw St Mary’s in all the final races, the tension was mounting as each race now had six competitors, and lane changes from the previous heats. Our team showed stamina and great ability in their races and the supporting swimmers grew hoarse through encouragement. The results were announced in reverse order and our smiles broadened as the bottom three teams were announced, we now knew that we had a place in the next Gala against North Lowestoft winners.Third place was taken by Pakefield’s A team and we waited to see if we had come first or second. What a thrill to hear that second place was awarded to Grove with 50 points! YESSSS! our 56 points had gained us first place! We now knew we would be in the Gala against teams from North Lowestoft to find the school which would represent Lowestoft at the School Games in Bury St Edmunds. Suffolk School Games Festival

On Friday 5th July 2013 our swimming team from Years 5 and 6 represented Lowestoft Schools at the Sainsbury’s School Games Championship in Bury St Edmunds.

Sixteen schools competed, many of them middle schools with many more pupils to choose a team from than ourselves.

The games began with an Olympic Style Opening Ceremony on the race track, the swimmers then left the other competitors to take part in their disciplines, which included athletics and gymnastics.

It was difficult for our backstroke representative; Thomas Miller to compete with the sun in his eyes from the window above but he finished well.   The positions were decided on times as there were three heats in each race and Thomas came in a respectable twelfth. Luca McComb swam in the freestyle and achieved twelfth position, Jack Testoni gained a fifteenth place in a very hard fought breast stroke race, with very little between the first and last positions. The relay team included Alejandro Pinillos-Fernand replacing Rex Cotton, who swam freestyle and the team came fifteenth. This was a harder competition than last week’s in Lowestoft with the top swimmers from the County on show - well done boys! The girls were in another class as they demonstrated excellence throughout, Madison Lankester came a close fourth in the backstroke, again with the sun in her eyes, Tara Mills came second in the freestyle and Caitlin King won her heat coming second in the competition. Erica Mills completed the relay team who came first overall, beating the other teams by over more than a second..

We were third in our heat and the overall placement was seventh from sixteen, so a very good position for a small school. The top teams were; Sir Robert Hitcham Framlingham, Ixworth Middle School and  Hardwick Middle School. The team represented Lowestoft and St Mary’s very well, showing good team spirit and determination.  No medals this week but we are extremely proud of them.

Our grateful thanks go to Mr and Mrs McComb and Mrs Testoni for their support, ice creams and help with transport.
